Despite what’s being shown on TV nowadays, the truth is that renovating your home can’t always be a DIY job. There are specific tasks that should only ever be attempted by a qualified tradesman. Although the services of a tradie will cost you money, it will help you save time and money in the long run because you can be assured that the job gets done quicker, and done right, thus preventing costly repairs. So if you’re planning on remodelling or renovating your property, it’s best that you leave the following jobs to a tradesman:

1. Anything that has to do with electricity. Sure, it can be quite easy to replace bulbs or even switches in your home. However when it comes to more complex matters related to electricity such as rewiring your home, it is highly recommended that you leave them to the experts. There are several reasons why you should do this. For one, electricity can be very dangerous to handle if you don’t know what you’re doing. You run the risk of getting electrocuted, which may result in mild shock, or even death. Another reason is that if you get your wiring wrong, this could cause the connection to short out, which could make what would have been a simple problem more complicated. What’s even worse is that a short circuit could cause fires, which can be an even bigger problem.

2. Jobs that require serious plumbing skills. Again, you can probably do basic plumbing jobs on your own, such as replacing faucets, or pipes under your sink. Apart from those jobs however, it may be a good idea to hire a plumber for all your other plumbing needs. These include installing or altering your drainage system, your pipes that connect to the water main, and your toilet system. While handling plumbing isn’t as dangerous as electricity, there are a lot of things that could go wrong here that could leave you frustrated, and waste a lot of time and money in the process. So again, let a professional tradesman do those for you.

3. Things that can affect the structural integrity of your property. Installing tiles on your floor or repainting walls can be fairly easy, so it’s perfectly fine for you to DIY these. However, leave it to a tradesman to do jobs that may affect the structural integrity of your property, such as when you want to remove a post, and add or change your current roofing. Not only are these jobs physically taxing and require several people to perform, they could also weaken the structure of your property and put the lives of everyone living there at risk, so have a tradie do them for you.

Small DIY jobs are perfectly fine so long as you are confident enough with your skills and have the right tools to get them done. For bigger jobs though, leave them to the tradies. Believe it or not, your wallet – and most likely your back – will thank you for it.
